  • Petitions filed to be taken up on 13 October
The Court of Appeal (CoA) has issued summons to State Minister of Water Supply Sanath Nishantha Perera to appear before the CoA on 13 October to deliver an explanation as to why he should not be penalised over an alleged statement in contempt of court he had made during a recent media briefing. A petition filed by the Judicial Service Association of Sri Lanka (JSASL), as well as two petitions filed by two lawyers – Priyalal Sirisena and Vijitha Kumara – alleging that Perera had made a statement in contempt of court and seeking necessary action against him, was taken up before a panel of CoA Judges on Wednesday (5). At a recent media briefing at the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) headquarters in Colombo, Perera had made critical comments regarding the granting of bail by the respective courts to activists who has been arrested with regard to the people's struggle that demanded the resignation of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
