Champika's arrest violated Parliamentary protocol: Speaker

Speaker of the Parliament Karu Jayasuriya has said that the arrest of former minister Patali Champika Ranawaka has violated Parliamentary protocol that requires to be followed when arresting a member of the parliament. "Such haphazard arrests by law enforcement will propagate anxiety and distress. With due respect, I look forward to the judiciary to render justice," Jayasuriya said in a twitter message today. Issuing a statement the speaker's office said that the the speaker is of the opinion that he be informed first before any arrest is made. "It is astounding that the opposition which was hell bent in protecting such parliamentary traditions in the past fours years has now violated the same once coming into power," the statement read.
