Chamuditha given Police Victims Protection Division security

02 Mar 2022

BY Dinitha Rathnayake  Journalist Chamuditha Samarawickrama, whose residence recently came under attack from a hitherto unidentified gang, has been provided with police security, with officers being deployed for this purpose by the Victims Protection Division of the Police. Speaking to The Morning, Samarawickrama confirmed that he had been provided the security immediately following his conversation with Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG) Deshabandu Tennakoon. Samarawickrama previously claimed that adequate security had not yet been provided to him after four unidentified individuals attacked his residence in Piliyandala on 14 February. Even after the Kesbewa Magistrate’s Court issued an order directing the Victims Protection Division of the Police to provide sufficient security, he had been attending to his work without any additional security, he claimed. Several parties, including the Centre for Journalism and Education, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, the United National Party, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, and the National Movement for Social Justice called on the Government to conduct an impartial and speedy investigation into the same. “It has been days since the incident took place. Still the investigations are being carried out by the Police. No suspects have been revealed yet,” Samarawickrama noted. Samarawickrama said that he had provided video footage of 22 closed circuit television cameras installed at his residence. Samarawickrama, who previously served as the Media Director to former President Maithripala Sirisena, has featured criticism of both the current Government and previous Governments as well as the Police on his YouTube talk show.
