Chamuditha writes to IGP alleging death threats

08 Jun 2021

By Dinitha Rathnayake   Journalist and former Director of Media to the President Chamuditha Samarawickrama has informed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chandana D. Wickramaratne in writing about alleged death threats made against him, and has requested that an investigation be commenced by the latter. Speaking to The Morning, Samarawickrama said that he would reveal the suspected issuers of these alleged threats in the near future. “I am facing an organised attack on social media and I will reveal the identities of several persons in the future. I get anonymous calls from those who support this organised attack, threatening me for what I have done as a journalist. Some people get affected personally and politically due to my questioning, but it is my duty to reveal the truth,” he said. Samarawickrama further claimed that there could be a link between the death threats he had received and his recent commentary on the incident involving a party organised at the Shangri-La hotel in Colombo by event organiser Chandimal Jayasinghe and model Piumi Hansamali during a period when the travel restrictions were in place. Samarawickrama had, during a live television programme on 31 May, questioned the Police Media Spokesman and Senior Officer-In-Charge of the Police Legal Division Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Ajith Rohana on the delay in taking action against Jayasinghe and Hansamali. “I don’t have any issue with Jayasinghe and Hansamali or the Shangri-La hotel. However, I am determined to go ahead, whatever the obstacles are,” Samarawickrama said. Hansamali, who was taken to a quarantine facility following the incident, released a video on Facebook criticising Samarawickrama for allegedly being the cause of her plight. She claimed that it was due to Samarawickrama’s actions on television that the Police were forced to take action against them. In said television programme, Samarawickrama questioned DIG Rohana as to why the Police delayed taking action on those who took part in the party hosted by Jayasinghe and Hansamali at a five-star hotel in Colombo when it took rapid action against the common citizen. Meanwhile, journalist affiliated to the Free Media Movement (FMM), Seetha Ranjani, said that the FMM would also be sending a letter to the IGP requesting a probe into Samarawickrama’s matter. “We have requested an investigation concerning these alleged death threats,” she added.
