China won’t be happy with SL purchasing Indian fertiliser: Dayasiri

11 Oct 2021

Further to a statement issued yesterday (10) where the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka condemned the research done by the Sri Lanka's National Plant Quarantine Service stating the presence of the 'Erwinia' bacteria in the organic fertiliser imported from China, State Minister of Batik, Handloom and Local Apparel Products Dayasiri Jayasekara stated that an issue would arise where China would not be happy that Sri Lanka is purchasing Indian fertiliser. "Now we can't import fertiliser from China, and we have resorted to bringing fertiliser down from India. China is questioning us as to why we are not purchasing fertiliser from them. In the end, this fertiliser issue which could have been solved within the country has now led to a situation where China and India are asking us why we aren't purchasing fertiliser from them. They are trying to give us fertiliser even by force," said Jayasekara. Meanwhile, Former MP and State Minister Ajith P. Perera spoke to the media yesterday (10) stating that such questioning by the Chinese Government is an affront to the sovereignty of Sri Lanka. "The official statement made by the Chinese Government yesterday shows us how much they are involved in the sovereignty of our country and the powers of our Government. According to what they say, despite what will happen to our cultivation in Sri Lanka, and since an agreement has been signed with China we must accept these Chinese reports and use this fertiliser in Sri Lanka. This is a serious involvement in the internal affairs of the country," said Perera. He further went on to say that China cannot involve itself as such as Sri Lanka is not a Chinese province as yet, and the Chinese can try to achieve things through private companies and commissions, but also mentioned that Sri Lanka will not surrender to the whims of China.
