CID records statement from former PM over Easter bombings

29 Jan 2020

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has recorded a statement from former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe over the Easter Sunday bombings today(29).

On the 23 of December, when the case against former Defense Secretary Hemasiri Fernando and Inspector General of Police(IGP) Pujith Jayasundara was taken up, the Colombo Additional Magistrate was informed that the CID had sought to record statements from MP Rishad Bathiudeen, MP Rauff Hakeem, President Maithripala Sirisena, former Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe and Speaker of Parliament Karu Jayasuriya.
However, in January the CID informed court that Wickremesinghe and Jayasuriya had not provided dates to record a statement.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court seven-judge-bench headed by Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya granted time till March 6 for Sirisena and Wickremasinghe to file objections against the fundamental rights petitions filed over the Easter Sunday attacks.
