City development project reaches Baddegama

02 Apr 2022

By Uwin Lugoda The Government is continuing with its ‘100 Cities’ mega-development project, with another recently-developed town being vested in the public. According to the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing, Baddegama, a town located in the Galle District, was the most recent town to complete its development under the ‘100 Cities’ initiative. The new developments within the town were opened to the public last week, 15 March. “We finished developments and handed them over to the public under the instructions of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, who is the Minister in charge of these matters. Prior to the implementation of the ‘100 Cities’ programme, the town had gone undeveloped for many years,” said Ministry Media Spokesperson Prasad Manju. The mega-development project aims to develop under-developed towns across Sri Lanka and was one of the main development projects under the ‘Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour’ policy statement of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Under this initiative, development work was carried out in the Baddegama town while preserving its historical and cultural heritage. “The project was implemented by the Urban Development Authority (UDA) in accordance with the instructions given by the Prime Minister. These instructions were to develop the town without altering its existing, historically significant infrastructure,” said Manju. He stated that according to their development plans, the Baddegama town development consisted of eight components. He explained that as such, Baddegama had been developed in a more attractive and safe manner with the primary objective of creating a beautiful town while enjoying a new experience of eco-friendly comfort. Under this, Baddegama Junction has been developed and formalised with sidewalks and landscaping on both sides of the road from Baddegama Clock Tower Junction to its urban park. These developments have been accompanied by planting of trees and flowering plants and a surface drainage system in front of its urban park, alongside developments that include leisure and recreation facilities. Manju stated that Rs. 15.7 million had been spent on the development of Baddegama town. He explained that the development project implemented by the UDA commenced in September 2021, along with 18 other towns, belonging to Galle, Hambantota, and Matara. He stated that these projects were expected to uplift the economic and social aspects in these regions, leading to the eventual growth of its residents and surrounding communities. “Baddegama is one of the Galle District’s most beautiful towns and these recent developments under the ‘100 Cities’ project are a great relief for the people of Baddegama,” said State Minister of Coast Conservation and Low Land Development Mohan Priyadarshana de Silva when declaring the developments open.
