25 Jan 2021

The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) would purchase the face masks made by the low-income families in Colombo to be distributed free of charge in the city, Mayor Rosy Senanayake said. Speaking at an event held to distribute 3,980 sewing machines to low-income families within the municipality yesterday. The mayor said the objective of the programme is to boost the livelihood of the families impacted by COVID-19. She said the people may have to continue to wear face masks for another two or three more years. “We may not be able to afford to wear new face masks daily in the coming years. The CMC will purchase the face masks made by the low-income families at a price of Rs.10 each and distribute them within the municipality free of charge. Though we instruct the people to keep wearing masks, there are many who can't afford to buy a single mask. I hope this will provide a solution to that issue,” she said.
