The letter that was submitted to the Speaker of Parliament this morning by the youth who were arrested shortly after served as a reminder to the Speaker and the Parliamentarians of their duties during the severe economic situation in the country. The letter, submitted today (04) stated that it has been many days since the Gotagogama protests began with citizens demanding the Government and President step down. It outlined that despite this, there hasn't been an improvement in the country. "The economy has gone from bad to worse, the rupee has depreciated further, medicines are out of stock, the lack of essential goods have not been taken seriously by Parliamentarians," the letter stated. The letter further mentioned 3 suggestions to the Parliamentarians on expectations by the protesters. 1. The no confidence motion filed by the Opposition must be taken up for immediate consideration along with a debate and a vote within Parliament. 2. Irrespective of Party, everyone within Parliament must ensure that the President must be removed from his position as an initial step and matter of urgency. 3. The President and Prime Minister must be removed completely from their positions, stop the Rajapaksa family from holding political positions and to respect the demands of the citizens. The letter added that it was the Speaker's duty to bring into debate the aforementioned points. The letter was also forwarded to all Parliamentarians and the secretary to the Speaker of the House.
