Sri Lanka’s Covid-19 related death toll rose to 12  today (23) morning, with the Epidemiology Unit Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Sudath Samarweera confirming the death. The Department of Government Information (DGI) Director General Nalaka Kaluwewa, confirmed the incident through a communique released dated 23 August at 6.40 a.m. According to the DGI communique, the deceased was a returnee from India who arrived in Sri Lanka on 20 August, and after being screened and tested positive for Covid-19 was admitted to the National Institute of Infectious Disease (Infectious Disease Hospital) in Gothatuwa. The deceased was a 47-year-old female, who was also receiving treatment for cancer. A cardiac arrest had caused her death.
