Covid jab QR verification system delayed

By Skandha Gunasekara

The implementation of the mandatory vaccine verification programme at public places will be delayed by another two weeks, The Sunday Morning learns.

Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said that he expected the programme to be operational soon.

“We are in the process of developing the app and the QR code. This will take two weeks to complete, and then we will have it running. This system is to make it more convenient for the people,” Rambukwella said.

The Minister also noted that the Ministry of Health was now working with the Ministry of Technology to develop the app.

The Health Ministry had last month said the mobile phone app and QR code facility for verification would be operational from this week. The QR code system was introduced to the public to streamline the verification process and to minimise human contact at public places.

The programme requires proof in the form of the vaccine card to indicate two-dose vaccination for a person visiting public places, and was announced earlier last month (December 2021) with a schedule to start from the beginning of this month (January).
