The virus variant spreading in the United Kingdom has been detected in samples obtained from persons in several parts of the Western Province, Dr. Chandima Jeevandara, Head of the Department of Allergy, Immunology and Cell Biology, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, said.
He stated that tests were conducted yesterday (27) to find out whether different mutated COVID strands that are found in different parts of the world are spreading in Sri Lanka as well.
He added that the results of all these tests will be released this week. He also said that all the facilities and samples required for the tests have been prepared.
The Medical Faculty of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura states that a special investigation team headed by Dr. Chandima Jeewandara is preparing for the tests and that the final reports of the tests will be handed over to the Director General of Health Services as soon as the tests are completed.
