The Government’s crackdown on drugs within prison premises has resulted in some drug-addicted inmates dying by suicide within the last week, Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya said.
Police Special Task Force (STF) personnel have also been deployed to provide security to the outer perimeters of Welikada Prison, Magazine Prison, and Colombo Remand Prison (CRP).
According to the new steps put in place in prisons islandwide, STF personnel along with prison security and intelligence officials are to search all persons entering prison premises, including officials and inmates.
With the Government’s continuous operations in intercepting drugs being smuggled into prisons, the inmates who are addicted to drugs had behaved uncomfortably during the past week, the Commissioner General has added.
