Crackdown on Prison Officers | 15 suspended, 21 transferred

The Department of Prisons, in its attempt to rid its institutions of corruption, has taken strict disciplinary action in the past two months. Speaking to The Morning, Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya said: “Fifteen prison officers have been suspended from work from the Welikada Prison in Colombo, Magazine Remand Prison, and the Mahara, Boossa, Colombo, Galle, Negombo, Wariyapola, and Angunakolapelessa Prisons; these included an assistant superintendent of prisons, two chief jailors, and a jailor.” In addition to the 15 officers that were suspended, an additional 21 were transferred after it was discovered they had ties with prisoners from the Negombo and Boossa Prisons; nine officers of the Negombo Prison and 10 officers of the Boossa Prison were transferred. The Department is to take maximum disciplinary action against them under disciplinary charges and those who have serious charges would be sacked. The Police Department has also forwarded information to the Bribery Commission on the prison officers who have acquired assets illegally.
