28 Sep 2021

Responding to allegations made by the National Organiser of the All Ceylon Farmers Federation Namal Karunaratne surrounding the possible misappropriation of State funds amounting to Rs. 2.3 Mn at the State Ministry of Livestock, Farm Promotion and Dairy and Egg Related Industries, State Minister D.B Herath has denied these claims. "There are no luxury dining tables in this house. There are no cupboards that were purchased. We have only paid Rs 236,520 for all five beds in this house. These allegations are false, and when I am to leave this place all these items will be handed over to the Government,” Herath stated. He also clarified that none of his own family members have resided in his official residence thus far, and neither do they plan to do so in the future. This comes after Karunaratne claimed that Herath’s coordinating secretary had written to the Ministry secretary saying that the Minister wanted a variety of 48 items. “Six beds have been purchased. Rs. 465,000 rupees has been spent for six mattresses. Furniture worth Rs. 146, 900 has been purchased. A 40-inch TV, a 32-inch TV, an air conditioner and an automatic washing machine have also been purchased. A gas cooker has been purchased for Rs. 43,500. A blender, two 27 piece cutlery sets, a half door iron cupboard, a wooden rack and a study table have also been purchased,” Karunaratne alleged at a press conference on Saturday (25).
