  • Election Commission to update youth voters’ registry by November
BY Mirudhula Thambiah   The Election Commission (EC) is expected to make an official announcement on the declaration of the Local Government (LG) polls and the date of the polls by early next year.  Speaking to The Morning, Election Commission Chairman Attorney Nimal Punchihewa said that a declaration regarding the date of the LG Elections will be made by early next year by the Elections Commission. He noted that the commission is currently involved in updating the youth voters’ registry and is expected to complete it by mid-November.   “Our expectation is to complete the youth list and incorporate it into the voters’ registry by mid-November,” he stated. When queried as to whether the commission would hold the LG Polls soon after updating the registry, he noted: “Our expectation is to hold the LG elections before 20 March 2023. But the date is yet to be decided. We have to certify the youth voter register and the normal registry.” He also added: “We cannot hold elections soon after updating the registry. The General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary Level (O/L) Examination will be held in schools and most polling booths are conducted in schools. Therefore, we cannot hold elections soon afterwards.”
