Deaths after vaccine not due to vaccine

The Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health has determined that the post-vaccination deaths of two individuals from the Gampaha District had not been caused by the Oxford AstraZeneca Covishield vaccine, The Morning learnt. Speaking to The Morning yesterday (7), Ministry of Health Epidemiology Unit Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Sudath Samaraweera said that post-mortems had revealed that the deaths were caused by heart attacks, and that they were not connected to the vaccine. “The post-mortem showed that said deaths were due to myocardial infarction, what is called a heart attack. It has nothing to do with the vaccine.” Two individuals from the Gampaha District were reported to have died two days after being vaccinated against Covid-19. The Epidemiology unit was reported to have been probing the deaths last week in order to ascertain whether the deaths were due to the vaccination. Meanwhile, Army Commander Gen. Shavendra Silva received the vaccine on Saturday (6) as the last person of the frontline soldiers to get vaccinated against Covid-19. Stressing that the Covishield vaccine is safe, National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID) Consultant Physician Dr. Ananda Wijewickrama has said that the possible side effects of the vaccine are those that could commonly arise with any kind of vaccine, it was reported.  Dr. Wijewickrama was the first to be vaccinated against Covid-19 in the country. University of Sri Jayewardenepura Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine Head Prof. Neelika Malavige had also told the media that as per current reports, there is no danger of developing allergies with AstraZeneca’s Covishield vaccine.
