Decision on UNP leadership by first week of Jan: Ajith

27 Dec 2019

UNP Parliamentarian Ajith Perera says that the United National Party (UNP) will reach consensus on the party leadership by the first week of January 2020. Perera speaking to The Sunday Morning said discussions were taking a positive turn and that the final decision will be reached in the new year. Perera also said that recent arrests of party members have not stalled ongoing discussions. The UNP has been struggling to reach consensus over its leadership in the past several weeks. Former minister Sajith Premadasa has expressed that he would not take up prime ministerial candidacy in the forthcoming general elections if he were not appointed UNP Leader. Premadasa also stated that that crucial decisions regarding the party leadership should be taken by December. Ranil Wickramasinghe has expressed that he will retire once the general elections are over. A majority of the UNP parliamentarians have requested that Premadasa be appointed Leader of the UNP.
