Decline in patient count: State Minister says public acting responsibly but PHIs say lesser PCR tests

25 Feb 2021

State Minister for Prevention of Covid-19 Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle today said the number of COVID cases reported daily in the country has reduced due to the responsible behaviour of the public. However, the PHI Union alleged that the reduction has been mainly due to the reduction in PCR tests conducted in the country. Treasurer of the PHI Union Yasas Mudalige told the Morning that there has been a noticeable decrease in the number of PCR tests conducted lately. “There hasn't been an official instruction or procedure to reduce numbers but compared to earlier, the recent numbers of PCR tests conducted per day is reduced. This could be the reason why lesser number of patients are being identified in the country," he said. Responding to the statement by Dr. Fernandopulle, PHI Mudalige stated, "When we interact with the public, we cannot see a significant difference in how health measures are being implemented. Most of the public is still very careless and do not heed social distancing guidelines, especially in public transport and other gatherings. Therefore, we cannot say that the public have been acting responsibly." Further, the PHI Union stated that some patients being identified have not given a contact history, which made it difficult to trace through whom they got the infection. "This is why we believe that there are more patients in the society in addition to the ones being identified through PCR testing," he stated.
