Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Diana Gamage has been expelled from the Party over her decision to vote in favour of the 20th Amendment to the Constitution of Sri Lanka, The Morning learns.
“Our Party made a decision to vote against 20A. However, Gamage voted with the Government. Therefore, the Party’s Disciplinary Committee recommended sacking her,” Bandara told The Morning.
He also stated that the Election Commission will be informed of this new development.
Meanwhile, Gamage expressed that voting in favour of the 20th Amendment is what she believes in.
“I voted for it. If I have to do it again, I will. This is what I believe in and this is where I stand. Their decision to expel me is like the people in your home trying to put rules and regulations on you before throwing you out. What a joke,” she expressed to The Morning.
She also said that she is yet to be officially informed of the Party’s decision.
In the past, Gamage has been vocal about the legalisation of cannabis. She had told The Morning on previous occasions that the global cannabis industry is one that is worth billions of dollars, and Sri Lanka needs to capitalise on the same which will assist in the nation’s ability to settle international debts.
In April this year, she proposed in Parliament that Sri Lanka should legalise the cultivation and export of medicinal cannabis to other countries. However, her proposal was met with strong criticism.
