19 Mar 2021

Newly appointed National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) Board Member Dr. Rasitha Wijewantha has subsequently been appointed as the new Chairman of the NMRA, The Morning learnt. Minister of Health Pavithra Wanniarachchi made this appointment yesterday (18), reliable sources at the Ministry of Health told The Morning. However, Dr. Wijewantha is yet to assume duties and newly appointed NMRA Board Member Prof. Sisira Siribaddana is serving as the Acting Chairman during this interim period. As exclusively reported by The Morning yesterday (18), six new replacement appointments were made to the NMRA Board by Minister Wanniarachchi on the recommendations made by State Minister of Pharmaceutical Production, Supply, and Regulation Prof. Channa Jayasumana. The Morning learnt from NMRA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Kamal Jayasinghe on 17 March that Prof. Siribaddana, Prof. Sudeera Jayasinghe, Dr. Wijewantha, Dr. Sewwandi Subasinghe, W.M.G.M. Wijesooriya, and Attorney-at-Law Raja Goonaratne have been appointed to the NMRA Board. National Institute of Infectious Diseases (IDH) Senior Consultant Physician Dr. Ananda Wijewickrama, Dr. Lakkumar Fernando, Dr. Nissanka Jayawardena, Dr. Jayasinghe, Sanjeewani Dayaratne, and Dr. Sanath Lanerolle are the Members that still remain from the previous incarnation of the Board. The previous NMRA Board on 15 March had nominated Dr. Wijewickrama to Minister Wanniarachchi as the replacement for former Chairman Prof. Asita de Silva, who resigned this week. However that recommendation has been ignored.
