Drama beyond the Classroom by Somalatha Subasinghe Play House

The Lanka Children’s and Youth Theatre Foundation (LCYTF), popularly known as the Somalatha Subasinghe Play House, is set to commence its latest programme, “Drama Beyond the Classroom” on 5 March 2020. The programme is especially designed for Grades Seven to 11 children of schools that off er drama and theatre as a subject at school. The prime objective of the programme is to make drama and theatre learning an enjoyable experience for the participating children. All aspects of drama and theatre are presented to the children in an easy-to-understand way so that the artistic taste, cheerfulness, and playful sense of all children are enhanced. The programme is based on meticulously crafted activities and they give children the opportunity to experience the most important learning outcomes of drama and theatre such as sense of caring, world awareness, experience in human relationships and sociocultural values, a sense of basic art forms, and confidence and dignity. School going students with a knack to be creative and adventurous too can join the programme. For such students, the activities of the programme can be considered supplementary to the formal education they obtain in schools. This programme is conducted on Thursdays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Battramulla Lion’s Club Activity Centre located at Jayanthipura Main Road, Battaramulla. Dr. Chandana Aluthge, Mayura Perera, and Nilanka Dahanayake, all of whom are wellexperienced children’s theatre practitioners in Sri Lanka, will be the chief resource persons of the programme. The duration of the programme is 12 weeks and is off ered twice a year in March and June.
