Driving licence points system to go manual

  • Automated system faces technical glitches
By Dinitha Rathnayake A manual system of giving marks for driving licences is to be implemented soon, according to the Public Security Ministry. This decision has been taken to prevent road accidents occurring due to negligence. The Ministry has noted that even though an automated system is in place, the electronic process has however not been successful due to experiencing technical difficulties. The new manual system would be implemented after discussions with the Motor Traffic Commissioner General (CG). Last year, due to the increase in the number of road accidents per day, the system of giving marks was supposed to recommence. Under this scoring system, 24 points are given for driving licences, which will be deducted in the event of an accident. The driver’s licence will be cancelled after the score reaches zero. According to the latest World Health Organisation (WHO) data published in 2018 on road traffic accident-related deaths, Sri Lanka had 3,590 deaths or 2.82% of the total deaths. The age-adjusted death rate is 16.37 per 100,000 of the population, which ranks Sri Lanka 96th in the world. The Ministry also mentioned that there is a significant increase in road traffic accidents due to driving under the influence of drugs rather than alcohol.
