The Government hopes to transfer the issuance of driving licenses to the military, in which regard a committee too has been appointed, it is learnt.

Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) Commissioner General Sumith Alahakoon said that Metropolitan’s new contract for issuing driving licenses expires in six months.

Metropolitan had received the contract to issue driving licenses since 2009.

“The new contract signed by Metropolitan only gives them six months from 1 July,” Alahakoon said. He said that Minister of Transport Services Management Mahinda Amaraweera has set up a joint committee in this regard.

“It will be a joint committee with the Ministry of Defence,” he said, adding that the Minister and Secretary of Defence Maj. Gen. (Retd.) Kamal Gunaratne had already held discussions on the matter.
