EFL CARABAO CUP 2022 3RD ROUND :Arsenal stunned by Brighton; Liverpool saved by Kelleher

11 Nov 2022

Premier League leaders Arsenal were knocked out of the Carabao Cup as Brighton gained a shock away victory. Eddie Nketiah had given Arsenal the lead with a curling finish after Reiss Nelson’s run from the halfway line. Danny Welbeck, who played for the Gunners in the 2018 final made it 1-1 with a penalty after he had been fouled by debutant home goalkeeper Karl Hein. Kaoru Mitoma put Brighton ahead after a neat passing move and Tariq Lamptey added a third with a low strike. The loss in this third-round tie was only the third time in 20 matches in all competitions that Arsenal had been beaten this season. Liverpool Manager Jurgen Klopp praised the “absolutely exceptional” Caoimhin Kelleher after last season’s Carabao Cup hero set a club record as he saved three spot-kicks to spare the holders’ blushes against League One Derby at Anfield.  After failing to find a breakthrough in 90 minutes, Klopp’s side were forced to rely on the goalkeeper whose penalty gave them the trophy at Wembley in February to reach this season's fourth round. Kelleher repelled penalties from Conor Hourihane, Craig Forsyth and, crucially, Lewis Dobbin, allowing Harvey Elliott to slot home the final kick to send Liverpool through. In Kelleher’s eight EFL Cup appearances, Liverpool have won all four that have gone to a penalty shootout – with the Republic of Ireland international saving a club-record six spot-kicks. It was a deserved success as the hosts carried most of the attacking threat. Nick Pope proved the hero for Newcastle United as Eddie Howe’s side beat fellow Premier League club Crystal Palace in a penalty shootout to reach the last 16 of the Carabao Cup. Pope saved spot-kicks from Luka Milivojevic, Jean-Philippe Mateta and Malcolm Ebiowei as the hosts prevailed 3-2 after a goalless 90 minutes. Chris Wood, Kieran Trippier, and Joelinton each converted for Newcastle. Tottenham Hotspur were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by the Premier League’s bottom-placed side Nottingham Forest. Forest were the better team and took the lead on 50 minutes through a fine curled effort from Renan Lodi. An impressive Jesse Lingard headed home following a swift counter-attack to double their lead. Spurs Manager Antonio Conte named a strong XI, including Harry Kane, but his side were outplayed at the City Ground. Steve Cooper in contrast made nine changes from the side which drew with Brentford in the league on Saturday.  A late strike from Boubacar Traore sent Wolves into the last 16 of the Carabao Cup as they overcame Leeds. A poor game at Molineux was decided by a fine finish from Traore, who fired into the roof of the net from the edge of the area. His strike ensures Wolves will still be in the EFL Cup when new manager Julen Lopetegui takes over on Monday (7). Leeds came close early on but were kept at bay by impressive Wolves keeper Matija Sarkic. The draw for the EFL Cup fourth round was set to take place yesterday (10). (BBC Sport)
