The Sri Lankan Government has made plans to expedite its development of Eheliyagoda town located in the Ratnapura District, in order to provide the residents facilities that will add convenience to their lives.
According to the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa recently instructed the Urban Development Authority (UDA) to expedite its plans of development for the previously-neglected town. These plans are set to be implemented swiftly in a formal manner, allowing the residents of the town and nearby communities to experience development benefits quicker.
“Prime Minister Rajapaksa in his capacity as the Minister of Urban Development and Housing has called for the acceleration of the development projects under the town of Eheliyagoda. Due to this, the UDA has taken the necessary steps to speed up their work,” Ministry Media Spokesperson Prasad Manju told The Sunday Morning.
Manju stated that the UDA was currently in the process of completing the development work within the town, with development activities already commenced earlier. Discussions on the matter were held last week, 17 February, during a Prime Ministerial review of the work that has taken place so far.
These developments include necessary construction work such as the removal of all obstructions to the existing space in the town. Manju stated that the UDA was also expected to carry out development activities in a manner that would further enhance the core and sub-business activities operating in the town of Eheliyagoda.
According to these plans, the UDA plans to replace each of the city’s dilapidated roads, sidewalks, and major public service points that are in disarray. These are to be made more suitable and built in a way that provides better quality of service to the people.
“Under this, all the roads connecting to the town centre will be widened, while roads and junctions that are in a run-down condition due to lack of maintenance over the years will be repaired,” said Manju.
The main objective of these projects is to carry out all these development activities in a manner that does not disturb the existing pattern of the town and does not cause any inconvenience to the people entering and exiting.
Under this, arrangements have also been made to beautify the areas where economic and trade activities are carried out within Eheliyagoda town. The UDA plans to do this by decorating each of the respective areas with corresponding colours and flowers of the same colour, highlighting their purpose. For example, it has been suggested that the areas within the town where the gem trade takes place be painted blue.
Manju stated that all these development activities would lead to a more convenient experience for both the residents of this town and those entering it for business.
