The Election Commission (EC) has proposed to impose a deposit for political party candidates as well as to increase the current deposit for independent groups.
National Election Commission Director of Legal Nimal Punchihewa said that it was time that political party candidates also made a deposit to contest elections.
“Currently, political party candidates are not required to make a deposit, only independent candidates do. But there is a proposal to make it mandatory for political party candidates to make a deposit as well at future elections. In addition, the deposit amount for independent groups is to be increased too.”
He said that Parliament would have to decide the amount to be increased.
“Parliament will have to pass a separate law to increase the deposit amount and make it compulsory for political party candidates to make deposits. They will have to decide on the amounts.”
