Embassy in Iran working to free four Lankans

BY Mirudhula Thambiah    The Sri Lankan Embassy in Tehran, Iran is working with the Azerbaijan authorities to sort out the detention of four Sri Lankan Nationals by the Azerbaijan Border Guards. The four Sri Lankan citizens were detained by Azerbaijan Border Guards on 15 September when they illegally entered their territory, while crossing the country’s border with Iran.   Speaking to The Morning, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Director General (Public Diplomacy) Sithara Khan yesterday (18) said the Sri Lankan Embassy in Tehran is dealing with the Azerbaijan authorities inquiring into the detention of four Sri Lankan citizens for illegally crossing the border. “Our embassy in Tehran is working with the Azerbaijan authorities. They are accredited to Azerbaijan and they are in the process of obtaining further details about the situation of the four citizens,” she added. She also pointed out that detention is a formal routine that can happen when people engage in illegal crossings of any country’s borders. They will be arrested if they commit such offences. Accordingly, on 15 September, four Sri Lankan citizens were detained by the border security personnel of Azerbaijan in the district of Beylagan, when they attempted to cross the country’s border with Iran. It was reported that these four citizens of Sri Lanka were detained on 15 September at the territory of the Horadiz border detachment of Azerbaijani State Border Service near the Brinji Shahsavan village of Azerbaijan’s Beylagan district during an attempt to cross the State border with Iran. It was also reported that these detained Sri Lankan nationals had previously arrived in Baku, Azerbaijan from Doha and Dubai.
