This was stated at a discussion held with the Ceylon Fishermen’s Association at the Ministry of Fisheries today (01).

Special attention was paid to the factors affecting the development of the seine net industry.

The industrialists raised the issue of updating the existing Fisheries Act, and Minister of State Douglas Devananda stated that the Act will be amended to suit the future and that new technologies required by the industry and laws will be restructured for the long-term well-being of the industry.

The Minister further stated that the youth can be attracted to the industry by engaging in the seine net industry using the most convenient and efficient methods.

After discussions with the Coast Guard to amend the laws and regulations that hinder the construction of seine nets, the Minister of State emphasized the need to protect the traditional fisheries industry.
