Fake Govt. employment letters scam

21 Oct 2022

BY Buddhika Samaraweera The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday (20) informed Colombo Chief Magistrate Nandana Amarasinghe that it has commenced investigations into a large-scale financial fraud committed by a certain party who had sent letters bearing the signature of former Secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils, and Local Government J.J. Rathnasiri to 14 persons, promising them Government jobs. The CID informed the court that the relevant investigation has been commenced following a complaint received from Rathnasiri, and that the fraud has been perpetrated through a website titled “The Programme to Provide Employment to the Unemployed – 2021”. According to the CID, the complaint notes that 14 persons had come to the Ministry for employment with fake letters bearing the signature and seal of Rathnasiri on 8 December 2021. In addition, the court was informed that it has recorded statements from an official of the said Ministry with regard to the incident. That official had told the CID that there is a related file in the Ministry, but that no letter had been removed from that file after 19 March 2021. Therefore, the CID stated that it has discovered that the 14 letters in question are forged letters. The CID stated that it recorded a statement from a woman who had revealed that she had deposited an amount of Rs. 200,000 to two bank accounts on two occasions to a person she had come to know via the Internet. Accordingly, the CID requested the court to issue an order to the relevant bank managers to provide the CID with information regarding the two said bank accounts.
