SLPP Presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapakse said farmer debt will be written off within six months of coming into power. He was speaking at the SLPP maiden rally in Anuradhapura today. "All debt including micro-finance loans will be written off as apart of our government's relief package to the farmers" Rajapakse said. "The current government has neglected the agriculture sector in this country. We will make this sector a priority and maximize benefits for farmers," Rajapakse stressed. As a part of his relief package Rajapakse promised to provide fertilizer to all farmers free of charge. He further added that warehousing facilities will be provided to farmers to store their excess stock. "We will purchase rice at the best possible rate" he said He went on to say that compensation will be provided to farmers whose crops had been affected as a result of the drought in the recent past. "We will introduce modern technology for farming activities. This will help farmers obtain a better produce and an increased income," Rajapakse said. Rajapakse further promised to ensure food security in the country  through government sponsored programmes.
