Farmers in Poḷonnaruwa have urged President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to prevent intermediaries from creating a rice shortage.
The farmers made this request when the President joined the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) election campaign in Poḷonnaruwa today.
The farmers during a meeting with the President have noted that intermediaries were making efforts to artificially create a rice shortage despite big harvests in the last seasons.
The farmers have also requested the President to address the fertilizer shortage.
President Rajapaksa responding to their requests said that the government had taken steps to renovate rice storage facilities and put in place a mechanism for rice purchase from farmers.
