Former IGP not at risk of arrest over Wickrematunge murder

21 Oct 2021

By Our Court Reporter The Attorney General yesterday (21) informed the Supreme Court that former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jayantha Wickramaratne faces no risk of imminent arrest in connection with the murder of journalist Lasantha Wickrematunge. During the tenure of the previous Government, former IGP Wickramaratne, under the belief he was at risk of being arrested by the CID in connection with the murder, filed a Fundamental Rights (FR) petition at the Supreme Court requesting that an order be given to prevent this. When the said petition was taken up before a three-judge bench, comprising Justices Preethi Padman Surasena, Kumuduni Wickramasinghe, and Arjuna Obeysekera, yesterday, Additional Solicitor General Ayesha Jinasena, appearing on behalf of the AG, said there was no risk of this arrest taking place. Lawyers appearing on behalf of the former IGP then sought permission from the court to withdraw the FR petition, which was granted. Accordingly, the petition was successfully withdrawn.
