The Minuwangoda Magistrate’s Court yesterday (9) ordered the immediate eviction of former Minuwangoda Mayor Newton Kulasooriya and his family from a land owned by the Minuwangoda Urban Council (UC).
According to the legal proceedings, the house and land have been misused by Kulasooriya and his family members since 1977. When Kulasooriya was elected Mayor in 1988, he and his wife, Mohamed Ismail Noor Faida, had signed an agreement to rent the house.
The case (No. 68214) was filed by the Local Government Commissioner in 2009 as the authorised authority of the Minuwangoda UC following a decision taken by the Minuwangoda UC to take back the old village council and its land which had been misused by Kulasooriya.
Defendants have continued to appeal the decision to the Supreme Court (SC).
Following a SC order directing the case to be reinvestigated and heard in the Minuwangoda Magistrate’s Court, Minuwangoda District Judge Kesara Samaradiwakara has ordered that Kulasooriya, his wife, and other family members be removed from the house.
The Minuwangoda UC has decided to build a new library in Minuwangoda on the land with the old village council that has been thus acquired.
