Free electricity connections to low income families & Samurdhi recipients

Dullas Alahapperuma, Minister of Power, has urged the relevant authorities to make all arrangements to commence the first phase of providing free electricity connections to low income families and Samurdhi recipients who have not yet been provided with electricity. He was speaking at a progress review meeting on the project to provide electricity to all with the Samurdhi Authority, Ceylon Electricity Board and senior officials of the Ministry of Power at the Ministry premises on Tuesday (02). Minister Dullas Alahapperuma said that as a first step towards realizing the vision of prosperity, immediate steps should be taken to identify all households in the country that do not have electricity and provide them with electricity before the end of this year. The Minister has instructed the Samurdhi Authority to take steps to identify low income families and Samurdhi recipients scattered island-wide who have not yet received electricity facilities and to submit a report to the Samurdhi Authority before March 15, detailing the distance from their homes to the mains network and the construction status of their houses. He instructed the Chairman of the CEB to take necessary steps to expedite the process. Duminda Dissanayake, Minister of State for Solar, Wind and Hydro Power Generation Projects, who participated in the discussion, said that all Sri Lankans should be committed to meeting the electricity needs of the people and that the provision of electricity to Samurdhi recipient families should be expedited at the Divisional Secretariat level. He said that the relevant persons should be called and registered with the Ceylon Electricity Board through the internet.
