FSP to file FR against Police raid

01 Aug 2022

BY P. Waravita  The Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) hopes to file a Fundamental Rights (FR) petition regarding the raid of their offices by the Police last Friday (29 July).  Speaking to The Morning yesterday (31 July), FSP Education Secretary Pubudu Jayagoda said that the party hopes to file a FR about the police searches of the FSP office last week.  “In the morning at around 7.30 a.m, 10 officers dressed in civilian clothing came to the office with no search warrant and searched it. They did not disclose which police division they were from. After a few minutes, another team came and we asked for a search warrant, and then they showed us a warrant for Inter University Student Federation (IUSF) Convenor Wasantha Mudalige,” FSP Propaganda Secretary Duminda Nagamuwa told the media last Friday.  He claimed that there is a “psychological war” being conducted against those involved in the “aragalaya”.  “There are various threats to our party and offices. President Ranil Wickremasinghe came to office with promises of solving the people’s problems but the government has no plan or program or ability to solve them,” Jayagoda said while addressing a media briefing last Friday (29).  Tweeting about the incident on 30 Saturday, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Dullas Alahapperuma said that he vehemently condemns the “unlawful entry to the FSP headquarters” by law enforcement officers, followed by intimidation and violation of their civil rights. “As one of the 72 registered political parties in Sri Lanka, FSP is entitled to the same rights that other political parties experience.”  Many activists involved in the anti government protests over the last few months have raised concerns of increased surveillance and threats from different arms of the State, especially following the military crackdown of the Presidential Secretariat on 22 July, which the protestors were occupying.
