Fungi more dangerous than black fungus present: Dr Primali Jayasekara

16 Sep 2021

Amid reports of several patients diagnosed with mucormycosis or ‘black fungus’, Colombo Medical Research Institute Consultant Mycologist Dr Primali Jayasekara stated that there are even more worrisome fungi varieties in the air that infect immuno-compromised post Covid-19 patients. During a press briefing today (16), Dr Jayasekara explained that there have been more immuno-compromised patients who suffer from post Covid-19 fungal infections caused by Aspergillus and Candida fungi varieties. When inquired by the media on the symptoms of such fungal infections, Dr Jayasekara replied by saying, “The Aspergillus fungus starts to colonize within the lungs, which later on starts to spread, eventually covering the entire body. Such patients are the ones who have suffered Covid-19 pneumonia.” Furthermore, Dr Jayasekara stated that black fungus is not new to Sri Lanka, confirming that the first post Covid-19 patient infected with black fungus was diagnosed in June, and cases were recorded from Ratnapura, Trincomalee and Colombo. In her statement, Dr Jayasekara emphasized that black fungus is not localized to any particular area and can thrive anywhere in Sri Lanka, further mentioning that anyone can be infected and the best prevention would be proper hygiene practices.
