Gazette notification calls for local and foreign renewable energy generation proposals

29 Sep 2021

Steps will be taken to obtain proposals from local and foreign investors for the implementation of several renewable energy projects such as 50MW or more renewable energy plants including large-scale solar, wind, floating solar power plants built on reservoirs, and shallow offshore wind power plants, the State Ministry of Solar, Wind and Hydro Power Generation Project Development stated in a media release today (29). It further notes that nn Extraordinary Gazette Notification was issued on 24/09/2021 for this purpose and it is hoped that this will encourage private sector investors to invest in renewable energy projects.  The relevant proposals will be considered by a committee appointed by the Ministry and will be forwarded for further action. This comes after the Cabinet recently approved the launch of new projects for renewable energy with the participation of the private sector, however, new investors must meet the requirements of the Renewable Energy Authority Act No. 35 of 2007. The release further notes that this is the first step in achieving a sustainable solution to the growing energy crisis as a country, in line with the Policy Statement of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
