Get your glow on!
- Stephanie Waas on her skincare brand Body Glow by RSW
Keeping your skin looking healthy and radiant is important, because healthy skin is one of the biggest indicators that tell us whether we are healthy on the inside too. Treating your skin with care is incredibly important.
Treating skin kindly from both outside and within will leave you feeling great and looking fantastic too, and switching to natural and organic skincare products to moisturise your skin is a great place to start.
Stephanie Waas is the founder and formulator of Body Glow by RSW, a skincare brand that is made with simple formulas and natural ingredients, free from unnecessary oils and colourants.
Waas is a skincare enthusiast who loves everything about the art of skincare and has mastered it to perfection over 10 long years of being in the industry.
Brunch caught up with Waas for an in-depth chat about her products and doing skin care the right way. Here’s what she had to say.
How long have you been making your products for and how did you get started?
When I was around 16 years old, I had a lot of acne, and during this age, because of school, we’re always exposed to the sun. So apart from acne, I was also super sunburnt like most teenagers. Around this time, I started researching different ingredients to treat my own acne. I wasn’t aware about dermatology at that time, but unknowingly that’s how I first got a feel of skincare formulation.
A couple of years later, I quit my last desk job and my sisters and cousins suggested I sell the skincare products I made for them and myself. I created an Instagram page and borrowed Rs. 400 from my mother to buy four jars. I was able to sell four sugar scrub jars within the first week.
I started out with a range of natural products, mainly targeting acne and pigmentation, as they were my main concerns as a teenager. Today, I have over 10 years of experience in formulating skin care products, thousands of happy customers across the globe, and I’ve come a long way from my simple sugar scrubs.
What interested you in the art of making skincare?
Actually, I think I was pushed into it. It was like God saying “this is for you” because I was never into science during school and I am pretty sure my science teacher can’t comprehend it too. But this is how God works. Other than me trying to treat acne and pigmentation, I was just amazed by natural ingredients and the science behind it; I enjoy collecting beakers and designing new packaging, and different textures of the formulas interest me. I think I really grew into the industry.
Are your products organic?
To be organic, certain criteria need to be met by the grower. Organic and natural means there is no synthetics used in the way the ingredients were grown, harvested, and manufactured.
In my opinion, organic and natural are very similar; to claim your products are organic, there is a certificate that you have to get. However, not all ingredients have to be organic in the product to claim the product is organic. So there would be only a few ingredients that are certified organic.
Because there is still a blur with organic vs. natural, we don’t claim our products to be organic.
What would you say are the benefits of using homemade skincare products?
Homemade skincare products are, most of the time, naturally and locally sourced. You have the ability to know where your product is coming from. Also, there is a personalised touch as you would have the ability to speak with the formulator, but it is important to be mindful of knowing your skin type and which ingredients suit you the best. Personally, myself and the team have conversations and share our experience with our customers to help them choose what is best for them.
What has been the most surprising thing about running your own beauty company?
I still can’t believe I do this for a living. It was not my dream to become a skincare formulator, or start a skincare line. I knew I liked business as a kid; I grew up seeing my parents run their own business, so I liked the freedom they had, but I knew it’s very challenging to start your own and actually have returns from it. It’s challenging to be profitable in the world. But I have been blessed to start my own skincare line. I think the fact that I started my own skincare line in itself was a surprise to me.
All your products are handmade. What’s the process of it?
Yes, all my products are handmade. There’s careful consideration that goes into the formulation of each individual item, and the end product is a result of loving what I do and wanting to help and see results in all my customers.
For people who don’t know what kind of range you offer, can you tell us a bit about your product range?
Body Glow by RSW is a skincare line that focuses mainly on acne and pigmentation. Our formulas are simple and effective, and free from unnecessary ingredients like fragrance oil, essential oils, and colorants. Our products are formulated to help you get your glow on.
Currently, the product line includes face wash, serums, exfoliating gels, clay mask, body washes, and moisturisers.
Which is your personal favourite from your range?
Well, that’s a hard one. It would be the Golden Glow Body Scrub, just because it was one of my first products – that’s the exact recipe I used 10 years ago.
But in terms of formulation, I do like the Flawless Face and Body Wash because it’s so gentle on the skin and it doesn’t strip away the skin moisture. Also, every single customer that has used it has seen exceptional results – myself included.
Do you have anything coming up for 2021?
Well, we have been nominated as one of the upcoming brands internationally, but right now, I can’t speak much about it. I am so excited for that! In terms of products, we just launched the H2O moisturiser last week and the exfoliating body gel.
