GMOA islandwide strike from next week

The Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) will launch an islandwide strike next week, as its efforts to uplift the health sector in the past year have proved futile, GMOA Assistant Secretary, Dr. Navin de Zoysa said yesterday(15). “Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Dr. Rajitha Senaratne has completely destroyed the standards of the health sector in Sri Lanka.” Zoysa said. “We have written to 14 relevant authorities including the President, Prime Minister, the Cabinet of Ministers and the World Health Organization (WHO) on the deteriorating standards of the health sector in the country. None of these authorities have seen to our issues.” Zoysa Highlighted GMOA’s issues include, the shortage of drugs in hospitals, Failure to set standards for medical education in the country, the hiring of graduates from universities which are not approved by the Sri Lanka Medical Council, and the non prevalence of a standard procedure for doctor transfers. However, the GMOA said Children hospitals, women’s hospitals and emergency services will not be affected by the strike.
