Gota yearning to return due to high Thai costs

24 Aug 2022

  • Reuters reports Thailand stay already cost hundreds of millions
  • Quotes sources stating return likely in two weeks
Former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s return to Sri Lanka is likely in approximately two weeks as he is eager to return as soon as possible due to the high cost of his stay in Thailand, but has been held back by security concerns, Reuters reported, quoting two anonymous sources “familiar with the matter”. “He definitely wants to come back. But security is the main issue, and intelligence has advised that he delay his return,” one of the sources, a Sri Lankan Government official, had told Reuters. “He may return in two weeks or even before that, if arrangements for his safety can be made.” The second source had told Reuters that the high cost of his stay in Thailand was a factor in seeking a return home. “The bill has now run to several hundred million rupees, as it includes the cost for a private jet, a presidential suite, and round-the-clock security,” the source told Reuters. “The cost is becoming prohibitive.” The expenses are largely being borne by some of his supporters, according to another source close to the Rajapaksa family. Quoting the sources, Reuters said that Rajapaksa’s return, scheduled for today (24), had been deferred, as talks continue between the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and the President over his security and other concerns. The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) last week requested President Ranil Wickremesinghe to facilitate the return of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to Sri Lanka, stating that this is the party’s topmost request to the President. This request had been conveyed by Former Minister/MP and SLPP Founder Basil Rajapaksa during a discussion held at the President’s Office. President Wickremesinghe told Reuters last week he was “not aware” of any plans for Rajapaksa’s return. He also said any legal action against Rajapaksa would proceed in accordance with Sri Lanka’s laws.
