  • Daily amount per child hiked from Rs. 40 to Rs. 100; children attending online schooling; homes switch to coal to address LPG issue
BY Buwanajee Coralage   The daily financial support provided by the Government to children’s homes, per child, has been increased from Rs. 40 to Rs.100.  When inquired by The Morning on the state of children’s homes in light of the current economic crisis, the managements of most children’s homes had a positive outlook on the operations. Though experiencing a slightly less inflow of donations, the children’s homes are operating quite comfortably with children at most of them being given the required facilities to attend online school. “In terms of donations, though we are not getting quite as much as we used to, we are managing quite comfortably with the Government increasing their funding per child to Rs. 100 from Rs. 40 per day. We are starting to use coal-based cookers to solve the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) problem at present,” said an official from a leading children’s home in Colombo.  It was observed that the elders’ homes and homes for the disabled are also operating without much inconvenience at present. The Government continues to provide aid and care as usual to these institutions.  Speaking to The Morning, National Secretariat for Elders Director K.G. Lanerolle said that though no special provisions have yet been made regarding the aid provided for elders’ homes, the Government and the Secretariat continue to provide support and aid to these establishments.
