Govt. has the right to inspect Madrasa schools: Minister

15 Mar 2021

Education Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris today stated that the government has the right to intervene in the regulation of Madrasa schools in the country if they are run in such a way as to sow hatred, encourage ethnic division and threaten the unity and peace of the country. He expressed these views while speaking at a media briefing held in Colombo today. “There are about 1,965 Madrasa schools throughout the country and strict action will be taken against these schools in the future,” the Minister said. The Minister said that about 600 people from foreign countries had come to Sri Lanka during the previous government’s tenure to teach in these schools. He said that the previous government had not taken any action to regulate these schools.
