Govt. intervention to control sand prices

Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has said that the government will definitely intervene in the process of controlling the rising sand prices.

The Minister met the representatives of the associations involved in sand distribution yesterday and held discussions.

He pointed out that the sand distribution activities recommended by the Presidential Secretariat would be carried out entirely with the intervention of the government.

The discussion also focused on irregularities and incidents of frauds in sand trading activities.

Ministrr Amaraweera stated that sand brought from other places is being sold at higher prices as Manampitiya sand and sand mining is taking place in a few places in a manner that is harmful to the environment.

He further added that the government will focus on the issue.
