Govt. inviting more trouble by taking Muthurajawela: Lanza

08 Nov 2021

State Minister of Rural Roads and other Infrastructure Nimal Lanza said that the Government is inviting trouble by trying to acquire 4,400 hectares of land in addition to the 1447 hectares as the Muthurajawela Environment Sensitive Zone. He made this statement while speaking in parliament today (08). "We request the Government to conserve at least the area of 1447 hectares as gazetted earlier. According to the new gazette, lands used by temples, churches and the surrounding people for about 200 years will be acquired by the UDA. By doing this, the Government will only invite more trouble," said Lanza. Meanwhile, in response to Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Kavinda Jayawardena's accusations that the lands were acquired by the Urban Development Authority for development purposes rather than for conservation, State Minister of Urban Development, Waste Disposal and Community Cleanliness Nalaka Godahewa said that there was a controversy over the lands declared in the gazette notification and added that it could be rectified if there was an issue.
