Govt. says Chinese debts can be paid with Yuan but the invoices are in dollars: SJB

30 Mar 2021

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Harsha De Silva today revealed that even if the government has assured that some of the Chinese debts can be repaid using Chinese Yuan, the invoices of these debts are written in dollars and therefore the government will have to pay in dollars. “The government is incapable of paying such a debt because the amount of dollars in the country is rapidly deteriorating. Yesterday, the selling rate of the dollar was marked at Rs. 201.77. However, the Bank of Ceylon today sells the dollar at Rs. 204.4. The government is trying to calm the unrest by saying that we will get a dollar swap from China and that debts can be paid from Yuan. These are not practical solutions,” he said. He revealed that the Central Bank has still not received the $1.5 billion swap that was to be received from China but a Yuan swap had occurred. “We ask the government to be transparent and reveal whether the swap was in Yuan or dollars,” he stated.
