05 Apr 2021

Deputy Registrar of the Asgiriya Chapter Ven. Narampanawa Ananda Thera today stated that it is the duty of the government to punish businessmen who import coconut oil containing carcinogens without any discrimination. He further said, “Various organizations and individuals have raised issues from time to time regarding the importation of poisonous food items into the country. However, we do not see any authority taking action in this regard. The authorities responsible should not protect them. Therefore, it is the opinion of the Maha Sangha in this country that those who commit such misdeeds, regardless of their rank, should be punished.” Meanwhile, the Public Health Inspectors Union pointed out that they are not satisfied with the testing methods of coconut oil samples obtained from the market. The companies responsible for the importation of contaminated coconut oil are expected to re-export 13 containers of the same that have been found to contain high concentrations of aflatoxins in the next few days.
