Govt. to amend Rehab Bill per SC determination

BY Mirudhula Thambiah The Government is awaiting a special determination by the Supreme Court (SC) to make necessary amendments to the controversial Bureau of Rehabilitation Bill, The Morning learned yesterday (10), when speaking to Minister of Justice Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe (PC). Dr. Rajapakshe, who, as the subject minister, presented the said Bill in Parliament on 23 September, said: “We are awaiting the SC order, and we will go by the directions of the court”, while further noting that a decision will depend on the SC’s order. The SC is expected to arrive at a decision and present its determination to the President and the Speaker of Parliament in three weeks, after which the Speaker will pronounce the same in Parliament.  Meanwhile, on 3 October, the Attorney General had informed the SC that the provisions relating to the Bill will be judicially reviewed, and that certain amendments will be adopted by the Government to the proposed Bill at the committee stage in Parliament. Accordingly, eight petitions related to the Bill were filed before the SC.
