Govt. to amend the Rehab Bureau Bill at Committee stage: AG

BY Mirudhula Thambiah The Attorney General (AG) yesterday (3) informed the Supreme Court that the provisions relating to the Bureau of Rehabilitation Bill will be judicially reviewed, and that certain amendments will be adopted by the Government to the said Bill at the committee stage in Parliament. Eight petitions relating to the Bureau of Rehabilitation Bill were filed before the Supreme Court, of which six petitions were heard yesterday. Attorneys Nuwan Bopage, Suren Fernando, Pulasthi Hewamanne, and Hejaaz Hizbullah appeared on behalf of the petitioners yesterday.  Deputy Solicitor General Kanishka de Silva Balapatabendi appeared on behalf of the AG’s Department.  Petitions in relation to the Bureau of Rehabilitation Bill were taken up before Justices Gamini Amarasekara, Mahinda Samayawardhena, and Arjuna Obeysekere. Meanwhile, Minister of Justice, Prisons Affairs, and Constitutional Reforms Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe (PC) presented the said Bill in Parliament on 23 September.
