Highest number of rat fever cases in SL reported in 2020

Sri Lanka reported the highest number of Leptospirosis, commonly known as rat fever cases in the decade this year with more than 6,700 cases reported so far. Ministry of health statistics shows 6,716 cases by October compared to 6,021 reported in 2019. The previous highest was in 2011 with 6,689 cases. Ratnapura district is the most affected area for rat fever this year with 1389 cases, or 1/5 of total cases island wide. About 70 persons died by September this year due to rat fever, which is transmitted through water contaminated by urine of infected animals such as rats. Farmers, cleaners and those who come into contact with swamps and played with contaminated water are the most vulnerable.
